Not Given a Spirit of Fear

What has you crippled with anxiety today?

Think about it.

Or maybe if you're not feeling anxious today, think back to last week or earlier this month.

What has hampered your life with anxiety lately?

Maybe you're feeling anxious about the future. Will you find a spouse? Will you ever have a job you enjoy? Will the test results come back okay?

Maybe you're feeling anxious about the state of our world. Who will win the election? Will inflation ever stop? Will my kids be able to follow Christ despite what culture is telling them?

There are countless reasons you could be struggling with anxiety today or this week or this month or this year.

But what is the root of anxiety?

Is it not fear? A fear of the unknown or a fear of a certain outcome?

When we are anxious, we are really just afraid.

And God doesn't want His people to live in fear!

1 John 4:18 says:
"There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love."

God's love for us is "as high as the heavens are above the earth" (Psalm 103:11), and He is a good Father, who gives good things to His children (Matthew 7:9-11).

When we believe in God, we no longer have to fear! His love for us is perfect, and His plans for us are good. We don't have to fear punishment or betrayal or abandonment from God. We can trust He is working good in all of our circumstances (Romans 8:28).

More than that, we can trust that God has given us wisdom and power by His Holy Spirit to overcome our feelings when fears do arise. We don't have to be a slave to our fears anymore because God has empowered us to fight against them!

Putting on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6), renewing our minds in God's Word (Romans 12), resisting the enemy (1 Peter 5:9), taking captive our thoughts (2 Cor. 10:5), and dwelling on good things (Philippians 4:8) are all steps we can take to combat the fears and anxieties we have that come up against us.

All these things help us to rest in God and acknowledge the spirit of power, love, and sound judgement He has given us.

What will you do to combat your fears today?
